A major Fort Worth highway will be shut down for up to ten days after a garbage truck crashed into a bridge support, killing the driver.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 287, the Fort Worth Police Department said in a press release. Two men in a garbage truck were exiting the highway when they struck several supporting pillars for the highway bridge that goes across Erath Street, police said.

The driver was ejected and was declared deceased, and police said the passenger was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

In an update, police said that all lanes of U.S. 287 at Erath Street will be closed for seven to ten days while the damage is evaluated.

After responding to the crash, authorities began diverting traffic off of U.S. 287.

Southbound Drivers will be forced to exit at Berry Street, and northbound drivers will be forced to exit at Wilbarger Street, police said.

Police advise the public to take alternate routes until the location is deemed structurally sound.
