LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees approved names for three upcoming elementary schools and accepted one board member’s resignation during Tuesday’s meeting.
Back in July, the district held a special town hall meeting inviting the public to share suggestions and learn about the district’s naming process. After reviewing more than 300 community submissions, the school board made its final decisions.
The new campuses will be named:
Curtis and Hattie Gipson Elementary at the O.L. Slaton siteAnthony Peppers Elementary at the Matthews siteVelma Ruth Shambeck Elementary at the Williams site
The board president noted that while the board appreciated all community submissions, trustees prioritized recognizing individuals who dedicated their lives to education.
“I think there was strong [interest] in our facilities meeting… in naming these after educators that have made a significant difference,” the board president said.
District 5 Trustee Resigns
The board also addressed a leadership change following an announcement from District 5 representative John Weddige, who is stepping down to focus on his family.
Weddige has served on the board of trustees since 2024. His term was originally set to run through 2028.
“It’s been an honor and a privilege,” Weddige said. “I will continue to advocate and be a cheerleader for this district from the sidelines and as a parent. But I’m very thankful for my time here and just appreciate you all.”
