LIVINGSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A 14-year-old girl had to be flown to a Houston hospital Wednesday following what her family describes as an unprovoked attack by fellow students at Livingston High School.
Livingston police told Eyewitness News that five people have been arrested in connection with the assault, including four juveniles. They didn’t specify what roles each of them played and didn’t immediately release the name of the adult suspect.
In a message to parents, Livingston ISD acknowledged the altercation and said that “students who engage in this type of behavior will be held accountable.”
The victim’s family identified her as Nataya Carter. They’ve since seen cell phone videos of the altercation.
“She was assaulted. She was walked up on, and she was swung at, and she was hit continuously by two ladies,” the victim’s aunt, Amber Gardner, said.
At one point, Gardner said Nataya was thrown into a brick wall, hit her head, and began having seizures.
“When I got that call, I was scared because everybody knows she’s never had a seizure before, and so it’s like, for her to get in this altercation, and then this happened, we don’t know what to think,” Nataya’s sister, Jalyncia Gardner, said.
Nataya’s friend Darral Banks said several of the students who were arrested were trying to put an end to the violence, although police haven’t confirmed that.
“I was trying to pick up a few of her things and I couldn’t because there was blood on my hands, literal blood and I was crying ’cause I’ve never had blood on my hands like that,” Banks said.
Nataya’s family says she remains at the hospital Thursday and is having tests performed. It’s unclear when she’ll be able to go home.
