The main lanes of U.S. 287 at Erath Street in Fort Worth will be closed for the next several days after an overpass was damaged in a fatal crash Wednesday, police said.
Repairs are expected to take a minimum of seven to 10 days, police announced on social media. Northbound traffic on U.S. 287 will be detoured to the Wilbarger Street exit and southbound traffic to Berry Street and Vaughn Boulevard.
Fort Worth Police responded to the crash around 6 p.m. in the 3500 block of Martin Luther King Freeway, police said in a statement.
A garbage truck exited the highway and hit several supporting pillars of the bridge over Erath Street, police said. The driver was thrown from the truck and died at the scene.
The man who died was identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as 33-year-old Tyler Bradley Shivers. His passenger was identified by family as Ruben Saenz, Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV reported.
Saenz was injured and taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
Because of the crash underneath the overpass, all southbound lanes of 287 were closed at Erath Street, police said at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The investigation into the fatal accident is ongoing, police said.
