There’s an old joke regarding Mockingbird Lane after you cross Lemmon Avenue heading toward Dallas Love Field Airport. It goes like this: How can you tell the difference between a drunk driver and a sober driver? A sober driver is the only one weaving all over the road to avoid the potholes. In other words, Mockingbird Lane has been a hot mess for a long time. Thankfully, those days are coming to an end.

In preparation for FIFA World Cup 2026, the City of Dallas is doing whatever it takes to make a good first impression to all the national and international travelers that will descend upon Dallas next June.

“All that work is being done for FIFA 2026,” said Rozalind Dickerson Cleaver, community engagement manager for the Department of Aviation. “Think about it this way. We all clean up our houses before guests come to visit. We have international guests coming into town, so we’re going to clean up our house all over the city and Metroplex.”

While currently having to deal with two of the three lanes heading east and west on Mockingbird Lane closed, Cleaver said the city is making plans to alleviate the congestion for Thanksgiving holiday travelers.

“The project will halt in front of the airport entrance just before Thanksgiving to allow all of the traffic that we expect to be travelling in and out of the airport,” she said. The construction project in front of Dallas Love Field will continue after the holiday and the section of Mockingbird Lane between Lemmon Avenue and Cedar Springs Road will be completed by Nov. 30, 2025.

After the Thanksgiving holiday, the construction along Mockingbird Lane will continue from Cedar Springs Road to Stemmons Freeway. The anticipated completion date for the remaining road work is March 2026.

In good news for surrounding neighborhoods, the Midway Manor Park and basketball court is completed and re-opened for everyone to enjoy.

Work on the Primary Gateway Feature, located between Lemmon, Mockingbird and Airdrome, continues as does the Aircraft Observation Area. The remaining work is expected to be completed by Winter 2025.

“It will be a wonderful gateway to the airport,” Cleaver said.

To celebrate the completion of the project, Cleaver said the aviation department is working with neighborhood representatives to have a dedication ceremony March 7, 2026 along with a commemorative fun walk and run along Lemmon Avenue.

“It will be a great opportunity to see all the art pieces installed along Lemmon Avenue,” she said.
