Benbrook opened district play with a 17-14 victory over Fort Worth Southwest at Scarborough-Handley Field Friday.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the way that they fought,” Benbrook head coach Cody Slater said. “We fell down, and we faced adversity, and we fought through it.”
The Bobcats struck first when running back Hector Robles scored the only touchdown of the first half, giving Benbrook a 7-0 lead with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter.
From there, defense controlled the game. Both teams struggled to break through, and Benbrook carried its 7-0 advantage into halftime.
Southwest finally found the end zone with 8:58 remaining in the third quarter when defensive end Jeremiah Hogg intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. The pick-six tied the game at 7-7 and gave the Raiders newfound momentum.
“Extremely talented, extremely skilled and super aggressive,” Southwest head coach Joseph Turner said of his players this season.
Neither offense was able to take control for the remainder of the third quarter, sending the teams into the final period tied at 7-7.
Southwest broke the tie in the fourth quarter when Davian Fields scored a touchdown with 8:32 remaining, putting the Raiders ahead 14-7.
But the Bobcats responded.
Dorien Johnson scored a touchdown with 4:35 remaining to even the score at 14-14 and set up a dramatic finish.
“They’re all pulling and fighting for one another,” Slater said. “We talk about being all in, and they’re all in for each other.”
Benbrook ultimately secured the 17-14 victory with a field goal from Corbin Biggins.
“I was just thinking about making it,” Biggins said. “That’s all I think about just making it, picturing it.”
The Bobcats will face Eastern Hills on Oct. 1, while Southwest will host Western Hills in its homecoming game on Oct. 1.
