#10 LSU vs. #23 Texas A&M: The matchup

LSU went on the road last weekend and dropped a high-profile matchup to Ole Miss, the program Kiffin guided before unceremoniously leaving for LSU in the offseason. The Tigers trailed 24-7 at the half in Oxford, pulled even midway through the fourth quarter, and lost after Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss scored on a 14-yard run with 6:14 remaining. LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt lost the head-to-head matchup with Chambliss in a battle of Kiffin protegés, completing 16 of 27 passes for 158 yards with two total touchdowns (one rushing) and one interception. The Southeastern Conference afforded LSU little time to regroup and prepare for another top-25 showdown with Texas A&M Saturday night in Death Valley.

The Aggies enter this one as 8.5-point underdogs who also come off their first loss of the season, in their case a surprising 31-21 home loss to Kentucky to kick off SEC play. The Wildcats broke a 7-7 halftime tie by scoring three straight touchdowns in the third quarter, and they held on to deliver a signature top-10 victory for first-year coach Will Stein. Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed threw a pair of interceptions and had the ball in his hands early and often, completing 26 of 49 passes for 236 yards and a touchdowns and carrying 10 times for 80 yards and a score in the losing effort. While Kentucky didn’t score on the ensuing drives, both of Reed’s picks took likely points off the board by ending drives on the Wildcats side of the field.
