HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police said a suspect was arrested and charged with capital murder after a man was shot multiple times before crashing into a pole in northeast Houston on Sunday.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to a person-down report at 10100 Mesa Drive at about 1:20 a.m. When officers arrived, they reported finding the man unconscious, with gunshot wounds, in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
Authorities said the man was found with several gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, officials said.
The victim’s identity is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, according to HPD.
Detectives said surveillance video revealed that the shooting happened in a parking lot at 9905 Mesa Drive.
Investigators said the victim and the suspect met in the parking lot before the suspect tried to rob the victim. The suspect then shot the victim during the struggle before the victim tried to drive away, police said. The victim then struck the pole on Mesa Drive shortly after fleeing.
HPD detectives said the suspect’s vehicle was later found and the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Diego Gene Torres, was then detained. Investigators said that Torres admitted to his role in the deadly shooting during questioning with police.
Authorities said the Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted charges of capital murder against Torres, who was then booked into the Harris County Jail.
HPD said anyone with information about the incident should contact its Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
