SAN ANTONIO — A 29-year-old man shot by 10 San Antonio police officers during a confrontation on the West Side remains hospitalized but is expected to survive, as new information reveals more about the suspect, his criminal history and the officers who opened fire.

San Antonio police identified the man as Michael Angel Roque.

Officers responded to the 500 block of Ruiz Street at about 7:53 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of a man armed with a gun at the Pik Nik convenience store, according to information released by SAPD.

Police located Roque a short distance away and eventually followed him into the parking lot of Kozy Korner Saloon.

SAPD said officers knew Roque had a shotgun inside a duffel bag and spent several minutes attempting to negotiate with him and take him into custody.

Video from the confrontation shows officers repeatedly ordering Roque to show his hands and surrender.

“Please, just show me your hands, please,” an officer can be heard saying.

“Please, if y’all leave, I will leave,” Roque responded.

At another point in the video, Roque repeatedly told officers, “Kill me, kill me, kill me now.”

Police said officers used less-lethal beanbag rounds as Roque continued moving between vehicles.

SAPD said Roque eventually emerged from behind a vehicle, racked the slide of a shotgun and pointed it towards officers.

Ten officers then opened fire, striking Roque multiple times.

Police said a shotgun was recovered next to Roque. Officers performed life-saving measures before he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

SAPD said Monday that Roque remains hospitalized but is expected to survive. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Roque now faces multiple counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer.

Court records reviewed by News 4 show Roque has previous criminal convictions, including a 2022 conviction for second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Records show the offense occurred in December 2019. Roque was sentenced in May 2022 to three years.

Records also show earlier convictions involving drug and marijuana possession, theft and failure to stop and give information. Other cases appearing in Roque’s court history were dismissed.

Police also released information about the 10 officers who fired their weapons. Their experience with SAPD ranges from three months to 10 years:

Officer L. Prior, three months

Officer E. Leal, one year

Officer A. Flores, two years

Sgt. Solchenberger, 10 years

Officer R. Rodriguez, seven years

Officer J. Munoz, eight years

Officer H. Scorey, six years

Officer D. Schramm, five years

Officer A. Mallak, one year

Officer D. Pesina, three years

All 10 officers have been placed on administrative duty until further notice, according to SAPD.

The SAPD Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting separate but concurrent investigations into the shooting. Police said the findings will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office for an independent review.

Police have not said whether Roque was experiencing a mental health crisis during the confrontation.
