The white continent, more commonly known as Antarctica, has been a source of scientific exploration for many millennia.

UTA Special Collections will showcase some of this exploration at its Virginia Garrett Lectures on the History of Cartography, which occurs every two years. This year, it is titled “Frozen Frontiers: 500 Years of Mapping Antarctica.”

The event will feature guest speakers, a faculty panel, a planetarium showing, maps and student posters Thursday and Friday on the sixth floor of the Central Library.

“I want students to know that there’s something for everyone here,” said Madeline Lowry, UTA Special Collections cartographic archivist and curator of the gallery.

David Finfrock, NBC 5 senior meteorologist and donor of the maps featured in the gallery, will also be at the event. Finfrock will be signing posters Thursday at the gallery opening and on Friday, he will lead a discussion after the showing of “Ice Planets” at the UTA Planetarium.

The event will also feature raffles between each lecture, lunch for those who RSVP and more, according to Lowry and the event schedule.
