Houston’s fall festival season is upon us, which means Southern Smoke Festival is back, once again taking over Downtown’s Discovery Green on Saturday, October 3. Launched by James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Shepherd and his nonprofit, the Southern Smoke Foundation, the one-day festival has raised more than $7 million to support food and beverage hospitality workers in times of crisis. Every ticket sold goes toward that mission.
Think of it as the Coachella of food festivals. Some of the most talented chefs fly in from across the country to hand out unlimited bites and dishes many of them dream up just for the occasion—all that alongside musical acts, cooking demos, book signings, and giveaways. This year, over 60 chefs are participating, including more than 20 from Houston and Food & Wine’s 2026 class of Best New Chefs. Attendees will also get to experience drinks and cocktails from featured bartenders and some of the best wine bars from around the country.
Covering the dining scene in Houston for several years now, it can seriously feel like one big happy industry reunion, but navigating the festival, especially with the intent to make the most of it, is no small feat. In fact, it took me three years of attending before I felt like I got it right and truly made the most of a day that can feel like nonstop eating. Consider this your Southern Smoke Festival cheat sheet, with some of the best tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. Cheers!
