LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Wild Honey Hats and Cakin It With Mrs. T are both owned by Hispanic women, and both businesses started with a simple idea.
Brisai Rejino owns Wild Honey Hats. Rebecca Tijerina owns Cakin It With Mrs. T. Both started working from home.
“I remember stepping into that space and thinking, $150 a week, how am I going to do that? Can I afford that? Can we afford that? We had kids, and I was just like, I just don’t think I can do that. But I remember telling myself, I’d rather do it, and what if it fails? At least I can say I tried, because if I don’t do it, I’m never going to know,” Rejino said.
“When that idea is in your head, it’s there for a reason. Listen to it, and I envisioned this years ago, and I made sure that I paid attention to it, and now it’s here,” Tijerina said.
Faith and family
Rejino and Tijerina said faith and family played a role in growing their businesses.
“Step out in faith, chase the dream. You know, no dream is too big for God, and as long as that he’s in it, then in his hand is in it. He will provide and open doors for you, and that’s exactly what he’s done for me and Wild Honey Hats,” Rejino said.
“Every time I feel like I’m losing or I’m… I drop to my knees and I just pray. That’s the only person, I mean, the only way to look at things. God and my husband, my husband has been my rock. Like, there’s times where I don’t even want to do this no more. I’m like, no, I don’t want to do this. I’m scared. And he’s like, no, you’re already here. Finished it. He’s everything, my husband and God,” Tijerina said.
Inspiring others
Rejino and Tijerina said they hope to inspire others to take a leap of faith.
“A lot of Hispanic women are intimidated. They’re scared. Most of us are used to staying home and being the wives and raising children and things like that. And you can do all those things. I wear all the hats. I’m a wife. I’m a mom. I run a successful business. I’m a friend. I’m a sister. And I do it all,” Rejino said.
“My idea of this is to bring a lot of the kids from the east side to come in and learn techniques, learn how to do cakes, learn how to be successful, learn how to motivate themselves and be somebody in the community,” Tijerina said.
