The shooter who during a robbery last year killed a man inside a car in the parking lot of a Grand Prairie convenience store has pleaded guilty to murder.
Keionn Winters, who was indicted on capital murder in the killing of Jose Flores, was sentenced to 28 years in prison on the lesser-included offense of murder.
Winters pleaded guilty on Thursday and was sentenced under a plea agreement with the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office.
Winters shot Flores, 18, on April 27, 2025, in the 2400 block of West Tarrant Road.
Winters will become eligible for parole when he has served 14 years.
Had Winters, 19, been found guilty of capital murder at trial, a judge would have assessed his punishment at life in prison without parole eligibility. The state waived the death penalty in the case.
In Criminal District Court No. 1 in Tarrant County, Judge Elizabeth Beach sentenced Winters.
Flores went from the car to the store for help after he was shot, according to the district attorney’s office. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Winters left the scene before officers arrived. Law enforcement officers arrested him a month later.
