Legacy Business Month celebrates the local businesses that make Austin, Austin

Austin is always changing, but some longtime local favorites have become part of the city’s identity.

Preservation Austin is celebrating its fourth annual Legacy Business Month this October, highlighting independent businesses that have spent decades helping shape Austin’s culture.

Lindsey Derrington, Executive Director of Preservation Austin, joined Sierra Waggoner and Trevor Scott on We Are Austin to share this year’s featured businesses and how Austinites can explore them through the Legacy Business Month Passport.

What makes a legacy business?

For Preservation Austin, participating legacy businesses have been operating for at least 20 years, reflect Austin’s culture and have a single location, with a focus on independent, mom-and-pop businesses.

“If we lose them, we lose a piece of who we are as a city,” Derrington said.

This year’s passport features 10 businesses across Austin, including Callahan’s General Store, One in a Million, Casey’s New Orleans Snowballs, The Tavern, Boggy Creek Farm, Texas Chili Parlor, Westgate Lanes, Coco’s Cafe, Shenanigans Nightclub and Elysium.

Grab your Legacy Business Month Passport

Passports are free and available at participating businesses and several additional pickup locations. The idea is simple: grab a passport, visit the businesses, make a purchase and collect a stamp.
