Heavy rain exits region, but severe storm potential off Caprock remains

  • September 30, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A strong upper-level low pressure system swept across the Desert Southwest and pulled the remnants of Hurricane Polo into the region. This brought heavy rain overnight and leaves us with the potential for severe weather through the evening.

Rain quickly moved from southwest to northeast early this morning, but there is still a slight threat. Storms developing off the Caprock this afternoon into tonight could produce damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, with tornadoes unlikely but not completely ruled out.

As the low pressure system moves north and begins to occlude Wednesday morning, a dry slot has begun moving across much of the forecast area, curtailing additional rainfall chances. However, areas off the Caprock remain vulnerable to additional heavy rain through Thursday morning, with a Flood Watch remaining in effect for Stonewall County through Thursday morning.

Relief arrives late in the week. Cooler and drier conditions are expected to move in late-week into the weekend as the system moves out of the region.
