Northwest ISD is set to open its new high school in 2027, and its mascot will be the Diamondback, the district announced.
Davis High School, located in North Fort Worth, can eventually hold 3,200 students, which would place the Diamondbacks in Class 6A. But as the school opens, Davis will likely be a Class 5A campus.
The school will start with only freshman and sophomores to “establish its programs while not destabilizing existing high schools.” The district decided to open Davis High School because the other Northwest ISD High Schools (Trophy Club Byron Nelson, Northwest and Haslet Eaton) were at or near capacity.
Davis will have standard extracurricular activities, depending on student interest. Northwest ISD Athletics told the Star-Telegram they will petition the University Interscholastic League to place Davis’ individual sports in districts for the 2027-28 school year.
All team sports will play an outlaw schedule for their inaugural seasons. Northwest ISD athletics anticipates Davis will fully participate in the 2028 UIL realignment.
For now, Northwest ISD’s next step is to announce a proposed rezoning process to establish updated attendance zones. Students and faculty will also look to use the Diamondback as a “rallying point” to “establish school pride.”
“I am proud that Davis High School’s mascot will be one that commands respect, is uniquely Texan and makes its presence known when approached,” Davis Principal Dr. Ron Myers said via press release. “The clear choice from our students to select the Diamondbacks as our mascot shows the unified voice and identity they want to build together.”
Over 1,000 middle school students voted for the mascot in May, according to Northwest ISD, and Diamond received 83.5% of the vote. The other option was Aviator.
The school’s colors will be maroon, black and white, which is fairly similar to the MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks.
Davis High School will be the first in the Fort Worth-area to use Diamondback as a mascot. It’s somewhat of a rarity for snakes to be a mascot in Dallas-Fort Worth. In the greater Fort Worth-area, the only other school to utilize a snake is the Tolar Rattlers in Class 3A.
Davis High School is located off North Riverside Drive, near Interstate 35.
