The fried chicken from Whistle Britches.

Beth Rankin

September was a strong month for new restaurants in Dallas, while closures slowed.

But last month, we did still lose one of the best steak deals in Dallas, three different places to get some solid fried chicken, a downtown dive bar and a club whose “restaurant” was at best a food cart.

These are all the restaurants in Dallas that closed in September.

CLOSE

El Chingon
3404 Ross Ave.

Opening up a club posing as a restaurant between two large residential areas was not a good call for whoever was in charge of market research. El Chingon closed on Sunday, Sept. 6. The owners cited in an Instagram post that “operating the vision [for El Chingon] became a constant fight with the City”, and that they dealt with repeated code compliance visits, citations and ongoing challenges to their certificate of occupancy and restaurant use.

One Eyed Penguin
1404 Main St.

Roof damage from a storm in January forced One Eyed Penguin to close, and the downtown dive still has not reopened.

Medium Rare
5631 Alta Ave.

Medium Rare opened in Dallas only two years ago and brought one of the city’s best steak deals with it. A singular prix-fixe menu got you artisan rustic bread, a mixed green salad and steak frites with secret sauce for a stellar price of $31.95 before tax and tip. Luckily, there are many places in Dallas to enjoy a steak dinner for around $40, but we wonder if this will be the last time we enjoy a $30 steak in Dallas. Medium Rare officially closed on Sunday, Sept. 13.

Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken
2414 Victory Park Lane

Rise is a fast-casual chicken chain that has been slinging bird since 2012. The first Texas location in Victory Park opened in 2024, and despite being ranked in the Top 10 Best Biscuits by Food & Wine, it has closed.

Whistle Britches
2405 Dallas Parkway (Plano)

Whistle Britches in Dallas closed two years ago, and in August of this year, the Plano location also shuttered, leaving the Southlake location as the only remaining Whistle Britches in the metro. This closure followed the opening of three more recent openings by owner, Chef Omar Flores: Maroma, Even Coast and Casa Brasa.

ONEE Social Restaurant
1319 Botham Jean Blvd.

ONEE Social Restaurant was the phoenix of Fivee Bar & Bistro that closed to reopen as an elevated concept serving American food with a soulful twist. It was inspired by Bishop Omar Jahwar, who has been the voice of urban Dallas communities for over two decades, advocating for peace and working to transform toxic elements of urban cultures.

Street’s Fine Chicken
5211 Forest Lane

North Dallas lost one of our favorite spots for chicken tenders in town, but that’s okay because they still have one location, the original, off of Cedar Springs Road in Uptown. Street’s Chicken got started in Dallas around 2017 and has served French-style bird the Southern way ever since. Let’s keep it that way.
