EDINBURG, Texas – South Texas Educator Vangela Churchill launched her 2026 Republican campaign for the 40th District of the Texas House of Representatives with a new website. With over 25 years of experience in the educational field, Churchill has personal experience with the daily battle she sees every day with children, parents, and families struggling to make their lives better.
Said Churchill, “I’m running for the Texas State House because I can no longer stand by and watch families struggle while politicians argue. For my entire adult life, I’ve worked on the front lines as an educator, and all of us see these challenges our Rio Grande Valley families face every day. Educators deal directly with America’s biggest issues — students learning English as a second language, children without healthcare, families facing hunger or addiction, and classrooms stretched thin by budget cuts. Every one of these problems walks through our school’s doors. The truth is the core of many of America’s problems can be found in our schools – and that’s exactly where the solutions must begin. But until the politicians in Austin hear the voice of the people in the Rio Grande Valley, nothing will change. That’s why I will be the voice of working families in Austin.”
Churchill continued, “But Democrat politicians are more worried about being politically acceptable to out of touch left wingers in DC and Austin. We need elected officials in Austin who are on the ground and in the homes of families in Hidalgo County. Democrats have failed families and taxpayers. In my classroom, I never allowed students to coast by with a passing grade. I challenged them to reach their full potential. I’ll do the same in Austin. No excuses. No mediocrity. Only results for Texas families.”
Vangela Churchill came to the Rio Grande Valley as a young girl. She grew up in Port Isabel but lived most of her life in Sullivan City and La Joya, TX. Four of those years was spent in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico where she became fluent in Spanish.
Vangela is one of the first in her family to go to college and get a degree. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas-Pan American in 2003, a Masters of Fine Art from National University in 2011 where she wrote a book of Chicano Poetry, and a Master of Education focused in Administration and Special Education from St. Thomas University in 2016. Recently she went back to school and earned a second undergraduate degree with Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Administration and Management from Purdue Global in 2020. She is certified to be a principal in the State of Texas.
Vangela has been a teacher, professor, and principal for over 25 years throughout the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas and is currently teaching high school where she is the sponsor of the school chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Vangela has four children and three grandchildren and is the proud wife of a Texas State Trooper who also serves in the National Guard. They live in Edinburg and attend New Life Family Church in McAllen.
