Breast Cancer Awareness Month may happen every October, but for those navigating a diagnosis, the need for support continues all year long.

This month, the CBS Austin and Telemundo Austin Community Partner Program, supported by RBFCU, is highlighting the Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) and its work to provide education, connection and support to people impacted by breast cancer.

Norma Jean Chapa and Elaine Gonzalez with BCRC joined Sierra Waggoner and Trevor Scott on We Are Austin to share more about the organization, its new Lifeline Society and the upcoming third annual BCRC Summit.

Support through every step

BCRC supports anyone diagnosed with breast cancer, whether they come to the organization on their own or through a physician referral. Clients are connected with patient navigators who are breast cancer survivors themselves and can provide support throughout treatment and beyond.

The organization also offers educational programs, support groups, online forums and referrals to additional community resources, with services extending to clients and their support systems.

Becoming a lifeline all year long

BCRC launched its new Lifeline Society, a community of monthly supporters helping the organization provide its services at no cost to clients.

“The philosophy is pretty simple. It’s that breast cancer doesn’t end when October does,” Chapa said.

Consistent monthly support helps BCRC continue pairing clients with people who understand what they are experiencing and can walk alongside them through the uncertainty of a diagnosis, recurrence and life after treatment.

Finding connection at the BCRC Summit

The third annual BCRC Summit takes place Saturday, Oct. 17 and is open to anyone diagnosed with breast cancer, from those who have just received a diagnosis to survivors many years out.

Attendees can expect educational sessions covering topics including nutrition, finances and reconstruction, along with exhibitors and opportunities to connect with others who have shared similar experiences. Childcare programming will also be available through a community partner.

“More than anything, they’re going to make connections,” Gonzalez said. “They felt supported. They made friends and they walked away with connections so that they can stay connected afterwards.”
