It’s been more than a decade since Buc-ee’s announced plans to build a travel center in Boerne, and now the Texas chain could be just one final step away from finally beginning construction.

Boerne City Council approved up to $1.09 million for roadway and drainage improvements tied to the Buc-ee’s project during a September 22 meeting. At that meeting, local leaders said a preconstruction meeting for the work was scheduled for October 21, bringing the development closer to reality.

Buc-ee’s briefly began early construction on its initial roadwork in February 2025 before an extended pause while city leaders and developers worked toward an amended development agreement later that year.

“They have a pre-construction scheduled for October 21,” said Jeff Carroll, Director of Engineering & Mobility Streets & Drainage for Boerne. “That’s the date that they selected and scheduled. They have the plans approved, they have a contractor in place, so once we have that pre-construction meeting, they can get underway as soon as they would like to.”

The city and Buc-ee’s first entered into an early development agreement in 2016. The proposed travel center has remained in the works ever since, delayed for several years, and has become the subject of ridicule and public outcry from residents who said they feared how the project might transform their small town.

Buc-ee’s has not confirmed an opening timeline to MySA, but reports indicate the center is on track to open in 2027.
