Texas drivers paid more for gasoline last month than they have in any September on record.

The statewide average for regular unleaded gas hit $3.94 per gallon last month, making it the most expensive September in Texas history, according to a report released Thursday by AAA Texas.

Drivers in El Paso paid the most on average at $4.34 per gallon, according to the agency, a regional affiliate of the American Automobile Association. Customers in McAllen paid the least at an average of $3.74 per gallon.

The agency attributed the new record to ongoing conflict involving the Strait of Hormuz, which facilitates about a quarter of the ocean’s global oil trade, according to UN Trade and Development.

“While crude oil prices have recently eased back into the $90-per-barrel range, gasoline prices remain unusually high for this time of year,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster.

The last time Texas broke its September record for gasoline prices was in 2012, when gas prices averaged $3.63 per gallon.

The highest statewide average ever was set in June 2022 at $4.69 per gallon, AAA Texas said.
