Scotti Choice gets tears in his eyes while being photographed holding a photo of his mother Gloria Choice in his house in Fort Worth on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025. Choice’s mother was found beaten to death in a vacant apartment in 2005 and her killer has not been found. “I just can’t give up hope that they’ll be able to find out what happened,” Choice said.

On Sept. 12, Gloria Choice’s family gathered at a southeast Fort Worth park to celebrate her birthday. Even though nearly 21 years have passed since the 57-year-old mother and grandmother was murdered, the family feels like they’re no closer to finding answers.
“It really worries me, you know, not to have no solve all this time, no answers, no nothing,” said Scotti Choice, Gloria’s oldest son. “It’s just, you know what I’m saying, it’s just there.”
Gloria Choice was found beaten to death in a vacant Woodhaven apartment on Dec. 9, 2005. In the days following the crime, her four children distributed hundreds of fliers throughout the area, asking for the public’s help in identifying their mother’s killer.

The family received a glimmer of hope when a suspect was arrested in March 2012, but it quickly faded when the man was released a week later due to lack of evidence.
Scotti told the Star-Telegram in a recent phone interview that he’s working to keep his mother’s case fresh on people’s minds. He hopes that somebody who knows something will speak up.

Scotti has tried to find out from Fort Worth police if advanced DNA technology, known as forensic genetic genealogy, might move Gloria’s case forward. But the last time he spoke with a homicide detective in the spring, he was told they aren’t sure if his mother’s case qualifies for FGG testing. Scotti said he doesn’t know why.
A Fort Worth Police Department spokesperson told the Star-Telegram on Sept. 25 that “there is nothing new to report at this time.”
“I don’t know what to do,” Scotti said.
The yearly birthday celebration allows Scotti and his family to honor Gloria’s life and keep her memory alive for the great-grandchildren she never got to meet. Scotti said they do something different every time. One year they served tacos, another year they had a fish fry.
This year about 70 people, including Gloria’s nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, got together at William McDonald Park. They ate hot wings, baked beans, hamburgers and hot dogs.
“Everything was beautiful,” Scotti said of this year’s celebration. “It was nice.”

Until justice is served, Scotti plans to do all he can to keep his mother’s legacy alive and make sure she’s not forgotten.
