The road was closed for more than six hours on Friday after the incident.
AUSTIN, Texas — A bridge strike impacted traffic in Downtown Austin for more than six hours on Friday.
Police said an 18-wheeler struck an overpass above the main southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near 11th and 12th streets, east of the Texas Capitol.
All southbound lanes were closed except for the far-right shoulder for six to seven hours following the incident.
This story continues below.
On the 12th Street bridge, the westbound right lane and north sidewalk will remain closed until permanent repairs can be made, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) said. Officials have not provided a timeline for repairs. One westbound lane will remain open. Pedestrians can use the sidewalk on the south side of the bridge.
TxDOT said an inspection found the bridge remains structurally sound. Crews have removed debris from the area.
On Friday evening, crews assessed the damage and applied what looks like a tarp over the section of the bridge that was hit.
The bridge strike comes just a week after Austin police said another vehicle struck a bridge in South Austin on I-35 and Onion Creek.
