The buzz on social media is building: Terry Black’s Barbecue is blazing into town near Pearl.

“Coming soon,” says one post with video of the construction site on lower Broadway.

“This spring,” says another with a photo of brisket, sausage and ribs.

Not so fast, cautions Mark Black, co-owner of Terry Black’s Barbecue with his brother Michael.

Yes, a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation deed shows May 2026 as the projected completion date. But that’s only for the restaurant. The project also includes a boutique hotel, a second restaurant and an underground parking garage with more than 100 parking spaces.

“It could go beyond 2026,” Mark Black said. “I hope it doesn’t extend beyond that. But you never know. I hate giving timelines. I don’t think we ever hit timelines.”

It is not possible to predict the length of normal construction delays, Black said. But it is not possible to hide his excitement, either.

“We love San Antonio and we love that Broadway area,” he said. “Obviously, that’s become the dining destination. The Emmer & Rye (Hospitality) Group has some of the best restaurants in the world over there.”

Terry Black’s Barbecue boasts a reputation of its own. The Austin site was named a Michelin recommended restaurant in 2024. Yelp users recently named Terry Black’s the No. 1 place to eat in Austin.

“It’s a testament to the whole team,” Black said. “They operate the Austin store like nothing I’ve ever seen. Very much deserved.”

San Antonio will be the seventh city in a chain that has locations in Dallas, Fort Worth, Lockhart, Waco, Austin and Nashville.

The project site at 2100 Broadway St. is half a mile from Pearl, home to two Michelin one-star restaurants, Isidore and Nicosi, and three Michelin Bib Gourmand winners, Mezquite, Ladino and Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery. All except for Southerleigh belong to the Emmer & Rye Group.

Black, his siblings and parents were born in San Antonio. An uncle still lives in the King William District. He enjoys visiting his hometown, eating on the Riverwalk and stopping in at his favorite smokehouse. “2M is just spectacular,” Black said.

While enthusiastic about the project on lower Broadway, Black was hesitant to offer certain details. He declined to disclose the cost of the project, for example, or the kind of food the second restaurant will serve.

He did say the project will include a bathhouse.

“It’s going to be a multitude of buildings, all green spaces and courtyards — something a little more unique than a typical box hotel,” Black told the San Antonio Report in 2024.

The construction site on Broadway sits adjacent to the offices of the Alamo Colleges District.
