KaVontae Turpin set a season high in kick return yards (147) and produced his longest return of the season at 48 yards.
Turpin set the tone for the second half with the Cowboys trailing 16-6 with the 48-yard return. The Cowboys would later score a touchdown to cut the deficit to three points.
On the Cowboys’ second possession of the second half, Turpin took a kickoff and went 32 yards. Dallas would add another touchdown thanks to Turpin setting up the offense at the 36.
The kicking game was, well, hard to figure out.
Kicker Brandon Aubrey did a nice job with his kickoffs, the dirty balls that are sent short in front of the returner or knocked away from him forcing a return from near the sideline.
There was another long field-goal attempt by Aubrey that was blocked.
It’s the second consecutive week Aubrey has had a long field-goal attempt blocked. This time Aubrey had a 62-yard field-goal try blocked toward the end of the first half. Last week, Aubrey had a 59-yard try blocked against Baltimore. He also had a 65-yard field goal miss wide left on Sunday.
“Yeah, inside gap integrity is the key,” coach Brian Schottenheimer said of the blocked kick from the Texans’ Will Anderson. “You’ll see that. Again, Will Anderson is an incredible player. We’re a little [snake] bit in the one against Baltimore. We blocked out and stay strong in our inside gap. You want to make the guys beat you around the edges, not up inside. But the elite power and stuff of Will Anderson, he made a great play and it’s a long kick, so it’s going to be a little bit flatter.”
Aubrey is one of the more accurate kickers in the NFL. He’s made an NFL-record seven field goals from 60-plus yards.
He made a 60-yarder against Washington in Week 2, but this season he’s 1-3 from 60-plus yards.
“Yeah, I trust Brandon,” Schottenheimer said. “I mean he kicked [the 65-yarder] good, just pulled it a little bit to the left and I knew we got the ball in the second half. So a lot of confidence in the way our defense is playing. But I’ll put my money on Brandon every time.”
