Houston-area leaders marked Veterans Day on Tuesday with a downtown parade around City Hall as well as a ceremony honoring the sacrifices of military service members.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire was not in attendance, though city council members read a proclamation from the mayor marking Veterans Day on his behalf. Other city leaders praised Whitmire’s work with veterans.
“Mayor Whitmire definitely supports each and every one of you, and as a city, we promise this: We carry your values forward,” Houston Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz said. “We will honor you, not only in ceremonies, but with our daily commitment to our citizens, to be worthy of your sacrifice, which is not forgotten today.”

Harris County, which includes Houston, has the largest veteran population in Texas and one of the largest in the United States. A massive American flag bedecked City Hall on Tuesday as a parade of military vehicles circled Hermann Square.
Elected officials from local city council members to U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, attended the parade.
“All of us have a place in protecting our democracy,” Garcia said. “And to all the veterans: thank you. Thank you so much for stepping up.”
