SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs could begin the regular season without one of their biggest offseason additions.

The Spurs announced Sunday that veteran forward Tobias Harris suffered a strained left calf during training camp and will be reevaluated following the preseason, according to Yahoo Sports.

Harris did not participate in the Spurs’ intrasquad scrimmage Sunday and is considered questionable for the Oct. 20 season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The 34-year-old signed a two-year, $31 million contract with San Antonio in July and was expected to begin the season in the starting lineup. His shooting and ability to space the floor were among the reasons the Spurs added the veteran to a roster coming off a trip to the NBA Finals.

Harris joined San Antonio after spending the previous two seasons with the Detroit Pistons, where he helped a young roster make a dramatic turnaround.

He averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds last season as Detroit won 60 games and advanced to the playoffs. Harris provided veteran leadership for one of the NBA’s younger teams while giving the Pistons a dependable scoring option in the frontcourt.
