A bookstore that’s already in several states is cracking open a new site in North Texas.

Retailer 2nd & Charles, which specializes in used titles, is set to land in Plano later this year, according to Scott Kappler, executive vice president of operations. While there are roughly 50 retail sites for the brand in other parts of the country and state, there are no stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The city “really checks just every box for us,” Kappler said in a recent interview. “It’s obviously a very strong and growing community.”

Kappler noted the high concentration of college-educated households in the area, making it a good place to sell books. Its customer base includes families and young professionals.

North Texas is quietly adding bookstores as the longtime medium for the written word continues to power interest among locals. Frisco is set to add a local bookstore this year, while Barnes & Noble has been investing locally, including a new shop in Prosper.

The city of Dallas already is home to the headquarters for Half Price Books, the chain that specializes in used titles. It has stores in more than 15 states, including California and Pennsylvania.

The 2nd & Charles brand is part of another, and larger, bookstore chain, Books-A-Million. It specializes in new titles and has a location in Grapevine.

2nd & Charles lets customers buy and sell books — even as it has new titles. It also offers vinyl records, trading cards and collectibles.

The store in Plano is set to be near a busy intersection, Preston Road and Park Boulevard. It’s targeted to open in December. It will cover about 25,000 square feet, providing plenty of room for its displays and shelving.

“You never know what you’re going to find, right?” Kappler said.

The brand has three other sites in Texas, including in Lubbock and the Houston area.
