EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso ISD is among four Texas school districts selected for a detailed state performance review examining how taxpayer money is spent.
Texas Comptroller Don Huffines announced Tuesday that his office will review Austin, Barbers Hill, El Paso and Prosper independent school districts.
El Paso ISD had 46,244 students enrolled during the 2025-26 school year, according to the comptroller’s office.
The review was formally requested by Gov. Greg Abbott in August and will examine whether district spending complies with state law and whether money is directed toward students, classrooms and teachers rather than administrative growth or non-instructional bureaucracy.
“This review is an important step to ensure transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of public funds,” Huffines said in a statement. “Our office is committed to providing a clear assessment that helps Texans understand how their education dollars are being used.”

The comptroller said Abbott has been informed of the districts selected for review.
Austin ISD, Barbers Hill ISD and Prosper ISD were also chosen. Their enrollment figures range from about 8,000 students at Barbers Hill ISD to more than 69,000 students at Austin ISD.
The comptroller’s office expects to complete its final report by Dec. 31, 2026, ahead of the 90th Texas Legislature, when lawmakers could consider any recommended reforms.
