HOUSTON – Forty-five Chihuahua-mix dogs, many of them suffering from infections and other medical problems, were rescued Tuesday from a mobile home in north Houston, according to Harris County Constable Precinct 1.
Constable Precinct 1’s Animal Cruelty Unit removed the dogs from a home in the 9900 block of Edgeworth Street as part of an ongoing animal neglect investigation.
Most of the dogs were reportedly pink and hairless due to infections and other maladies. Constable Alan Rosen described the conditions inside the home as “terrible,” with an overwhelming odor.
“No dog should have to live like that,” Rosen said. “This is one of the largest dog seizures that we have seen in a home.”
The Houston SPCA assisted with the rescue and is providing the dogs with veterinary care and other assistance. One of the dogs was in critical condition and received immediate care at the scene.
Four chickens and a pig were also seized from the property.
The Animal Cruelty Unit will continue investigating the case. Once the investigation is complete, detectives will review the evidence with prosecutors to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Rosen said the rescue is a reminder that owning animals comes with a responsibility to properly care for them.
“We need everyone’s help to keep animals safe,” Rosen said. “If you see something, say something.”
Anyone who witnesses suspected animal cruelty can contact the Houston SPCA’s animal-cruelty hotline at 713-869-7722.
