New Wedgewood-Houston venue raises parking concerns ahead of October opening
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A new music venue in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood is raising concerns about overall congestion. The Truth opened less than a week ago, and residents said they have already started avoiding leaving their homes on show days.
“The lines get really long at certain points of the day and night before and after a show,” Cealey Godwin said.
Each show draws a different crowd, though. On Tuesday, about a hundred people were in line roughly an hour before showtime. Meanwhile, hundreds of concertgoers were waiting in line for a sold-out show the night prior, according to video sent to WSMV4.
“You almost want to stay in anytime that there’s a show, which makes it kind of difficult when you live here and you want to do things, but the venue and the shows are making that hard,” Godwin said.
She said she factors in the risk of losing her parking spot, being stuck in traffic and said Ubers have certain restrictions.
“I can’t even get dropped off at my own house because of Uber, so it’s been tough,” she said.
Local resident John Helphinstine said the venue has “definitely” created a traffic problem, which he thinks could get worse on certain days.
“I also wonder what would happen when Geodis [Park] is having a game at the same time that The Truth is having an event,” he said since the soccer stadium is only about a mile away from the venue.
Godwin said she is hopeful the venue and community can work out the issues in the coming months to make the process smoother for everyone.
“I think with anything new, you’re going to try things out, and it doesn’t work. Being able to be okay with adjusting and understanding if the next thing doesn’t work, you can adjust again,” Godwin said. “As long as they’re kind of tapping into the community and getting their feedback and then making adjustments as they go, I think that can be a fair compromise.”
The venue is drawing performers including Miranda Lambert, Jack White and Sting to the neighborhood in its first month of operation. According to managers, The Truth has 26 concerts scheduled this month.
The venue has not returned WSMV’s request for comment at the time of publication.
In the past, its general manager had said they plan to evaluate and update their parking and traffic management plans as they go.
