New funding will help land air taxis at a Fort Worth airport.

Fort Worth Meacham International Airport will support electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, also known as air taxis, through a $92,500 award to fund charging infrastructure at the facility. The award is among $477,500 in funds provided to four North Texas airports by the Regional Transportation Council.

Transportation officials said the funding will help expand the regional network and allow North Texas airports to advance air taxis and other air mobility operations.

“We want to make sure that as eVTOL aircraft become available and operations begin to scale, our airports are ready to support them,” said Ernest Huffman, program manager for aviation planning at the Arlington-based North Central Texas Council of Governments. “This investment is about building out that regional network now.”

Denton Enterprise Airport and Granbury Regional Airport each received $92,500 awards for electric aircraft chargers while Greenville Municipal Airport landed $200,000 for its project, officials said.

The funding represents a strategic investment in the region to support the developing technology, Huffman said. The infrastructure will help support the Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, the Center for Advanced Aviation Technologies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and future private investment.

Texas is one of the first locations selected by the FAA to begin operations under the pilot program to establish a regional hub.

On Sept. 10, the Texas Department of Transportation introduced Project Nexus at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport as part of the pilot program testing how advanced air mobility can be integrated into the nation’s transportation system.

The first phase will include testing of aircraft propulsion and automated piloting systems as operational and regulatory requirements are established to safely bring these technologies into broader use. Testing is underway in North Texas locations including the Fort Worth Stockyards, Arlington, Plano and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Industry partners — including Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies Inc. and Wisk Aero — are supporting regional flights to connect Fort Worth, Dallas and other major Texas cities through the aircraft.

Roger Venables, Fort Worth’s aviation director, said the funding will help Meacham airport install electric infrastructure to support the next-generation aircraft.

“The charging equipment will be installed in an operational area at Meacham capable of accommodating compatible electric vertical takeoff and landing (aircraft) and electric conventional takeoff and landing aircraft, allowing aircraft to be recharged, if needed, between flights to other airports participating in the North Texas advanced air mobility network,” he said in an email to the Fort Worth Report. to

There is no schedule yet for eVTOL flights at Meacham, Venables said.
