Austin police are searching for a man they say fatally assaulted 66-year-old Jeffrey Grable while he was lying near a North Austin bus stop.

Investigators believe Grable had been lying near the bus stop for several hours before another man approached and assaulted him, investigators said. The man then fled the area.

Police have not said what led up to the attack or disclosed how Grable was killed.

A CapMetro driver spotted Grable on the ground shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday and reported seeing blood around him, police said earlier this week. Officers arrived around 5:17 a.m. and found Grable with injuries to his body. He was pronounced dead at 5:34 a.m.

Police described the suspect as a Black man in his 30s, about 6 feet tall and 185 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, black pants, white shoes and a backwards cap.

Homicide detectives had spent Tuesday morning canvassing businesses near the bus stop, which sits near a Walmart and Murphy USA gas station, and looking for surveillance video that could help investigators determine what happened.

Police are now asking anyone who was in the area that night to come forward, particularly people who may have photos, video or other evidence connected to the killing.
