With six weeks in the books and district play now in full swing across the state, it’s time to press pause and acknowledge some of the top performers of the year so far.

There are still 10 weeks left in the season, including up to six postseason games for the top teams in the state, so plenty can still change – and just about every coach in the state will give some sort of coachspeak answer when talking about hot starts, usually including some variant of “it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.” Still, some of these starts simply cannot be ignored.

North Crowley and Waxahachie have been part of a season-long debate about who is truly the best team in Texas high school football.

Waxahachie can claim that it is officially ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 6A by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. North Crowley can make the case that it belongs in the top spot because of dominant wins over 12-time state champion Aledo, eight-time state champion Southlake Carroll and three-time state champion Duncanville.

On Friday, they will decide the rankings argument on the field, as Waxahachie hosts state No. 3-ranked North Crowley at 7 p.m. in a matchup of 5-0 teams.
