LUBBOCK, Texas — June Burr has been bowling since college. Five years ago, she moved from Washington to Lubbock and was soon introduced to her bowling league, the Work Dodgers.
“I like it here because we’re all ages. We have, well, one of the substitutes today just graduated from high school, and yet here we are, older people and me. So it’s a cross-generational thing that’s wonderful,” Burr said.
Weekly routine
Burr and her league bowl every Wednesday at Whitewood Lanes, near 50th Street and Memphis Avenue. She says it keeps her active and has a simple explanation for how she does it.
“Be active and eat healthy, get plenty of sleep…those are important factors. I never smoked and never drank alcohol and so my constitution can stay active,” Burr said.
Bowling despite being legally blind
Burr is legally blind, but she doesn’t let that get in her way. Dianne Black, president of Work Dodgers, says Burr is an inspiration to her and the other members.
“I have been bowling probably for about 50 years. And I’ve never seen anybody that is so determined. And I mean, she’s here every day. If we’re going to bowl, she’s going to be here. So we’re proud of her for that, for showing up as she has. Because so many of us, we think, oh, we just don’t need to do this anymore. But we all look at June and we’re like, yeah, we can do this,” Black said.
Both Burr and Black say it’s not about how high you score, but sisterhood and continuing to do what you love.
“It’s given me a chance to meet people and interact with people… It’s a happy thing for me. I just really enjoy the interaction,” Burr said.
