SAN ANTONIO – The high school football playoff race is heating up as Burbank and Sam Houston square off Thursday night at Alamo Stadium in a key District 14-5A Division II matchup.
Burbank (1-4, 1-2) is coming off its first victory of the season, a 36-29 win over Highlands on Oct. 2. Running back Edward Rodriguez rushed for 279 yards and four touchdowns after the Bulldogs were outscored 156-48 in their first four games.
“We finally put them together, fixed some of those things, and it ended up being successful for him, which, you know, builds confidence, and hopefully we continue going,” Burbank coach Mitchell Ricker said.
Sam Houston (4-2, 3-1) enters the matchup following a 27-7 victory over Lanier on Oct. 1, led by junior running back Jaidon Hamilton’s 131 rushing yards.
The Hurricanes currently hold the district’s third playoff spot but have their sights set on a championship.
“Our goal is to be a district champ, and now we still have that goal ahead of us,” Sam Houston coach Rashard Colquitt said.
Thursday Night Lights coverage from Alamo Stadium begins at 7 p.m. on CW 35.
