A hiker in the backcountry of El Paso County was taken to the hospital Wednesday night after being rescued by helicopter.

The hiker and at least one other person were in the forested area near Old Stage Road about 5 p.m. when the hiker sustained unspecified injuries that required transportation, El Paso County Search and Rescue spokesperson Chris Valentine said.

Due to the mountainous terrain, responders had to call the Colorado Search and Rescue Association and the National Guard to send a helicopter to come for the hiker, Valentine said.

The hiker’s condition is unknown.

The local search and rescue team is a group of volunteers that responds to about 200 calls for service each year. Its busiest time is during the summer.

Most of the time, members of the search and rescue team can get the injured party out on their own, but sometimes they need assistance because of the difficult terrain they often have to navigate.
