If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times: El Paso NEEDS an H-E-B!

For years, El Pasoans have been practically begging the beloved Texas grocery store chain to open a location in the Sun City. We’ve wished for it, we’ve hoped for it, and some of us have probably even prayed to the H-E-B gods for it.

And what has all that begging gotten us? NOTHING!

I’ve never even stepped foot inside an H-E-B, but after hearing people rave about their famous buttery tortillas (and the candle they made that smells like them!), I somehow feel personally offended that El Paso still doesn’t have one.

But after years of hoping, wishing, and practically pleading with the H-E-B gods, I think it’s time we have a difficult conversation, El Paso.

Maybe we’re just never getting an H-E-B.

El Paso Has Been Begging for an H-E-B for Years

This isn’t some new obsession. El Pasoans have been asking for an H-E-B for YEARS!

There’s even a Facebook page called “Bring HEB to El Paso” that’s been around since 2013. We’ve had petitions, rumors, social media campaigns, and plenty of people asking the same question: When is it finally our turn?!

Meanwhile, we’ve watched other Texas cities welcome new H-E-B locations while El Paso continues to sit here patiently waiting for an invitation to the party.

And by patiently, I mean we’ve been practically screaming outside the window for years.

Why El Paso Still Doesn’t Have an H-E-B Grocery Store

Well, after years of wondering if the rest of Texas was just gatekeeping H-E-B from El Paso, we actually have a little more insight into what’s going on.

According to MYSA, H-E-B has pointed to supply chain, logistics, and distribution challenges as reasons why expanding into El Paso isn’t currently in the cards.

So, it’s not necessarily that H-E-B doesn’t love us. We’re just a little too far away to make this relationship work right now.

And while that explanation makes sense from a business standpoint, it doesn’t make the rejection hurt any less!

Especially when all we want is to know what it’s like to casually walk into an H-E-B and buy those famous tortillas without having to ask someone traveling across Texas to bring us a pack.

El Paso, Maybe It’s Time to Move On From H-E-B

Look, I’m not saying H-E-B will NEVER come to El Paso. Stranger things have happened!

But at this point, I think we’ve gone through all five stages of grief over this grocery store.

We’ve denied that it would take this long. We’ve gotten angry watching other cities get stores. We’ve bargained with the H-E-B gods. We’ve been sad about those tortillas.

And now? I think we’ve finally reached acceptance.

Maybe it’s time to stop getting our hopes up every time a new shopping center is announced or a mysterious building starts going up somewhere in El Paso.

Until H-E-B officially announces plans to come to the Sun City, I think it’s best we just appreciate the grocery stores we already have and continue relying on our friends and family to smuggle those buttery tortillas back home.

Of course, knowing our luck, the second we finally accept that H-E-B isn’t coming to El Paso is probably when they’ll announce they’re opening one here!

And if that’s what it takes, you’re welcome, El Paso.
