Rockport-Fulton running back Austin Walker goes up field against Corpus Christi London in a game on Thursday, Oct. 8 in Corpus Christi.
CORPUS CHRISTI — The Rockport-Fulton football team passed one of its toughest adversity tests this season, and it came in one of the biggest games of the season.
Rockport-Fulton scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, grinding out a 38-20 road victory against Corpus Christi London on Thursday, Oct. 8 to stay undefeated in District 16-4A Division II play.
Corpus Christi London (4-2, 2-1) stole the momentum in the second half with two touchdowns to cut Rockport-Fulton’s 24-point halftime advantage to 10. But early in the fourth quarter, Rockport-Fulton’s offense found its footing and put together a 12-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard Austin Walker TD run.
Rockport-Fulton (5-1, 3-0) added another TD late in the fourth quarter when coach Eric Soza dialed up a third-down pass and quarterback Reid Snyder connected with Jaiden Manero for 34 yards to clinch the game.
“Determination, man, was just put your head down and keep driving,” said Rockport-Fulton offensive lineman Skeeter Aaron. “At the end of the day, if you don’t give it your all you’ll get nothing out of it. It’s just go all in and just go out.”
The 20 points was the most the Rockport-Fulton defense has allowed this season, but Soza said he knew London had an explosive team. He said he was pleased with his squad’s efforts to help put the game away, despite allowing 262 passing yards.
“This was a really good game … they play hard,” Soza said of London. “That’s a well-coached football team. We got punched in the mouth the second half, and we responded in the correct way. We’ve been spoiled with a couple of shutouts, giving up 20 points to them that’s a big accomplishment and glad to go 1-0 at the end of this week.”
