Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) warms up before a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026.

ARLINGTON — The summary of the Cowboys offense on Thursday night went this way: There were two tipped passes that led to interceptions. The run game averaged 3.8 yards per carry. Things got worse when receiver CeeDee Lamb was limited with a thigh injury. Left tackle Tyler Guyton departed the game with a back issue.
The fans at AT&T Stadium booed lustfully as if they were tired of watching.
And finally, as quarterback Dak Prescott walked to the locker room after a distasteful 24-16 loss to a winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers team, someone from a third-party company uttered what many were thinking.

“Embarrassing” was the word said to QB1, prompting Prescott to turn his head in that person’s direction.
An employee inside AT&T Stadium said “embarrassing,” after that Cowboys loss.

Something else was said as Prescott kept walking into a stunned locker room of a team that is 2-3 going into a three-day weekend trying to figure out why it was so good in the first four weeks of the season and so bad Thursday night.
“Yeah. I mean, not that they’re wrong,” Prescott said of the embarrassing remark. “But the thing was I just … Yeah, I don’t know if it was an employee, it was a driver, whoever it was, he’s free to speak his mind.”
Coach Brian Schottenheimer was asked if it was disrespectful to hear such a word.

“People are allowed to say what they want to say,” he said.
The Cowboys displayed themselves as an offensive powerhouse against the winless Houston Texans last week. Dallas survived that game thanks to its offense.
On Thursday night, following a touchdown on the opening drive, the offense stalled. You can blame the pressure the Buccaneers sent that caused communication problems.
Prescott went through a first-half stretch where he threw six consecutive incompletions. Most of the night you kept waiting on the Cowboys offense to explode. But Prescott had a pass come off the hands of receiver Ryan Flournoy — a throw he said he shouldn’t have made — that was picked off by linebacker Yaya Diaby with 10:51 in the third quarter.
The Bucs eventually pushed their lead to 24-10 with about three minutes to play in the third quarter.

So it was just time for the Cowboys offense to take over.
It couldn’t. On a fourth-and-3 at the Cowboys’ 43, Prescott, feeling pressure from blitzing safety Tykee Smith, sent a high throw to tight end Jake Ferguson that fell incomplete.
You would have thought that would have been the game the way the Buccaneers’ offense was going with a grind-it-out, work-the-clock style. But Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles, instead of attempting a field goal to add to the lead, went for it on fourth down from the 1 and didn’t get it.
It seemed as if the Cowboys had another chance at redemption.
The Cowboys’ drive started from the 1 and Prescott led them to a score with George Pickens catching an 18-yard touchdown pass. That drive didn’t have Lamb on the field as he nursed a thigh injury suffered the previous week.

The 2-point conversion failed but the Cowboys seemed to be in business again, down 24-16 with 5:26 remaining in the game.
Schottenheimer explained that going for 2 was part of their philosophy when down two scores late in a game.
That can be debated another day.
The Cowboys’ defense, after another pitiful performance, was able to turn the Bucs away to give the offense another chance.

Prescott drove the Cowboys to the Bucs 23 with 1:22 left. On a second and 1 from the Tampa Bay 24, Prescott sent a catchable pass to Ferguson, who couldn’t handle it. The ball was picked off by linebacker Alex Anzalone.
“Yeah, we know Ferguson has to catch the ball,” Schottenheimer said. “He knows that. And we really had two balls that were bouncing through the air tonight, if you will, against the team who’s playing a lot of zone coverage and so there’s guys back there to catch it and no one’s going to be harder on Jake than himself.”
Earlier this week, Prescott had an exchange with a reporter about whether this offense is playing to the GOTI (Greatest Offense There Is) nickname Prescott gave this unit.
At this stage of the year, Prescott didn’t believe his offense was playing as GOTI. But after watching Thursday’s performance, particularly from the offense, GOTI isn’t a word that should get used around here.

Embarrassing sounds more like it.
“Motivating,” Schottenheimer said of what he thinks when he hears someone use the word embarrassing. “We believe in what we’re doing. We believe that we have good players, good coaches, and we believe the solution is in this room and we’re going to get back to work.”
