EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/ CBS4) — Safety concerns are growing around the intersection of Artcraft Road and Doniphan Drive in El Paso’s Upper Valley, where TxDOT crash data shows 11 intersection-related crashes were reported within the past year.
The intersection is a busy connection for drivers heading through the Upper Valley, to Interstate 10 and into the ongoing Artcraft project area. Viewers have raised concerns that getting through the intersection can feel dangerous, citing worries about visibility and turning movements, especially when traffic is heavy.
In a response from the Texas Department of Transportation, officials said, “TxDOT is not aware of any specific safety concerns at the Artcraft Road and Doniphan Drive intersection.” TxDOT also said the city maintains the traffic signals at that location and “would be responsible for coordinating any future signal modifications.”
City of El Paso officials said the city has received about a dozen calls related to the intersection within the past year. Those calls included concerns about signal timing, debris and requests to modify lane assignments. The city said it evaluated signal timing at the intersection as part of its 2023 citywide signal synchronization study.
The city also said that because work is underway in the area, there is a written agreement indicating TxDOT has oversight over the signals at the intersection throughout the duration of construction.
After being asked for clarification, TxDOT said lane assignments have not changed and will not change. TxDOT said that once the project is completed, existing right turns will be separated by a median and striping will be re-traced. The agency also said channelized right-turn movements will be added to improve traffic flow once the project is complete.
