More than halfway through the season, Johnson is chugging along like a freight train with no signs of stopping.
The Jaguars stayed perfect with a 65-18 win over Roosevelt on Thursday at Heroes Stadium, continuing their dominant run through the District 28-6A schedule.
Johnson (5-0, 3-0), the top-ranked team in the Express-News top 20 power rankings, amassed 518 yards on offense and put the Rough Riders away quickly with a 31-12 lead at halftime. The Jaguars have beaten all five opponents by double-digit margins, and their high-octane offense is averaging just under 49 points per game.
They showed that formidable strength against Roosevelt (3-3, 2-1) with a balanced attack the Rough Riders couldn’t solve.
Senior quarterback Elvis Estrada threw for 194 yards on 8-of-18 passing with three touchdowns to three different receivers.
Johnson rushed for 309 yards and averaged over 10 yards per carry. Noah Cartwright rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Jeremiah Johnson had 108 rushing yards and two scores to lead the way on the ground.
The Jaguars scored 17 points in the final 4:58 of the first half to pull away, and they slammed the door with two quick touchdowns to open the second half and extend the lead to 44-12 midway through the third quarter.
They started the run with a 29-yard field goal from Ethan Joseph, then senior defensive back Mikhail McCreary intercepted a pass from Roosevelt quarterback Xavion Chambers and returned it for a 61-yard touchdown.
After the Rough Riders answered back with a touchdown run from Ernest Smith with just over two minutes left in the half, Johnson struck back in 91 seconds, capping the quick drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge from Johnson 37 seconds before halftime.
It didn’t take much longer for the Jaguars to add on in the third as Bryson Thompson rushed for a 4-yard score with 10:23 on the clock. Estrada then found Colin Cragun for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 7:18 left in the third.
Cragun finished with two catches for 48 yards. Braelyn Allen led the receiving corps with three catches for 91 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown from Estrada to open the game. Justus Jeffery added three catches for 55 yards and a score.
Chambers led Roosevelt with 18 carries for 157 rushing yards and a touchdown, and he completed 11 of 20 passes for 153 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Johnson aims to keep its undefeated season alive against Clark on Oct. 17 in a 2 p.m. tilt at Gustafson Stadium. Roosevelt suffered its first 28-6A loss of the season, and the Rough Riders look to strengthen their bid for a playoff spot when they take on Brandeis at 7 p.m. Thursday at Farris Stadium.
