Galveston Bay, where the Texas City Dike is located.
A minor died, and six first responders were hospitalized after a water rescue during Sunday’s swift winds at the Texas City Dike, according to a Texas City spokesperson.
On Sunday afternoon, authorities responded to a 9-1-1 call for two minors in the water near one of the boat ramps at Texas City Dike, according to Jennifer Laird, the Texas City spokesperson.
A red flag warning was in effect at the time, according to the National Weather Service, with winds of up to 30 miles per hour. The windy conditions caused one of the water rescue boats to float into rocks and flip over.
Both minors were brought to a hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead. A city spokesperson did not immediately have information on the condition of the other child.
Of the six firefighters and emergency medical services personnel who were hospitalized, four have been released, according to a spokesperson, and the other two are in stable condition.
The Texas City Dike is the longest man-made fishing pier in the world, stretching nearly five miles into Galveston Bay.
The National Weather Service’s red flag warning is in effect until Monday evening.
Authorities had not released the names of the minors as of Monday morning.
