San Antonio’s St. Mary’s Strip is getting another new nightlife concept, this time in the former home of The Amp Room.
A new bar called La Descarga is slated to take over the space at 2407 N. St. Mary’s St., according to a fresh filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Renovations are expected to begin Dec. 1, with work on the project expected to wrap up by the end of April 2027.
Details about the new bar remain scarce, but the name may offer a clue about what’s in store.
La Descarga is also the name of a well-known Cuban-style rum and cigar speakeasy in Los Angeles, complete with Havana-inspired decor, live Latin music, dancing and an extensive rum selection.
“Descarga” also refers to the improvised jam sessions associated with Cuban music, though it’s unclear whether San Antonio’s La Descarga will follow that concept. There’s also no indication that the owners of the Los Angeles bar of the same name are involved.
La Descarga will replace The Amp Room, the longtime St. Mary’s Strip music venue that closed in October 2025 after a decade in business. Its owners cited a rent increase. Five years earlier, new ownership had stepped in to “save” the rock ’n’ roll-themed venue from closing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For now, La Descarga’s concept remains unclear. Its arrival marks another change for one of San Antonio’s best-known nightlife corridors.
