North Texas residents planning to visit government offices, banks or post offices Monday should check holiday schedules before heading out.

Columbus Day, also observed as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, falls on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. The federal holiday will affect several services across Dallas, although some local operations will continue as usual.

Dallas ISD students will also have the day off. The district has designated Oct. 12 as a professional development day for employees and a student holiday.

Dallas garbage, recycling and brush and bulky item collections will continue on their regular schedules, according to the city. The McCommas Bluff Landfill and transfer stations will also remain open during regular operating hours.

Dallas Animal Services’ shelter will remain open, although its administrative offices will be closed. Residents can continue reporting service issues through 311.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit will continue operating, with special rail service adjustments for the State Fair of Texas. DART’s Orange Line will operate between DFW Airport and Buckner stations, while additional Green and Orange Line trains will serve Fair Park.

Dallas County does not list Oct. 12 as an official county holiday, so residents should not assume county offices will follow the city’s closure schedule.
Residents should check individual business and local government schedules, as holiday hours may vary across North Texas.
