SAN ANTONIO — His dad, Rene Cardenas, is a famous San Antonio DJ now his son wants to take the city’s music scene international. Our Yami Virgin, who started out as a radio DJ while at UTSA, introduces us to an artist ready to make his own name on the world stage.
Two turntables, six minutes, and a chance to put San Antonio on the world stage.
“The DMC battle is the most prestigious DJ battle that has ever been on the planet,” said Rene Cardenas, known as DJ RC3.
RC3 has won the U.S. Nationals.
Now, he’s headed to London for the DMC World Finals.
“I’m going to go to London and show everybody how the USA Rolls and how we do it down here in the 210,” Cardenas said.
He’s competing in the classic category, showing off his scratching, beat juggling, and musical creativity.
Between practice sessions, he’s studying business administration at St. Philip’s College.
“I feel a lot more independent being that I’m really focusing on myself and I’m the one that’s worried about myself and making sure that I am on top of everything,” Cardenas said.
After competing in Tokyo last year, he says he’s more comfortable taking the world stage.
“I make sure that I have fun while I’m doing anything related to DMC and especially when I’m out there,” Cardenas said.
To help cover the trip, RC3 will showcase his battle routines at Pueblo Hall, Oct. 25, a chance for all of us in San Antonio to hear his skills before the world does.
