Oklahoma, thanks to two fourth-quarter interceptions, toppled Texas in perhaps the most shocking upset in the Red River Rivalry’s long history Saturday, 27-24 on a walkoff 47-yard field goal by Tate Sandell.
It marked just the third time in the rivalry that a No. 1-ranked team had lost, the first since 2008 when Texas, ranked No. 5, beat then No. 1-ranked Oklahoma 45-35.
It’s the first time a No. 1-ranked team lost to an unranked team in the rivalry.

Here are five thoughts from a shocker in which Texas could not overcome horrific mistakes:
Sategna!
No, it’s not your kid’s favorite building block game, it’s Oklahoma wide receiver Isaiah Sategna, who made sensational catches in the final 20 seconds to set up the game-winning field goal.
Sategna, a native of Austin who previously played at Arkansas, had more than half of his 64 receiving yards on two plays after Oklahoma intercepted Arch Manning with 19 seconds left.
After Arch Manning was intercepted, quarterback John Mateer hit Sategna with a pass along the Texas sideline that was initially ruled incomplete by officials, but after review, video clearly showed both feet landing in bounds. On the next play, with 12 seconds remaining, Mateer hit Sategna along the opposite sideline for a 20-yard gain. Sategna, falling backwards was able to get his front foot in bounds before the second one landed out of bounds.

Thrown away

Manning picked the wrong week to start tossing pick-sixes.
His ill-advised throw across his body in the fourth quarter floated above his intended receiver and right into the hands of Denton Guyer’s Peyton Bowen, who rolled off a 42-yard return to give Oklahoma a lead.
It was the first pick-six of Manning’s Texas career.

It did, however, extend the Bowen family’s streak of pick-sixes for Oklahoma to two. The last interception for a touchdown by a Sooner had been by younger brother Eli Bowen last November against Alabama.
Penal colony
Texas’ defense gave Oklahoma life in the second half with significant penalty mistakes.
On Oklahoma’s game-tying 47-yard TD drive, two costly Texas penalties accounted for nearly half of the Sooners’ yardage. The most egregious of those: A roughing-the-passer call on linebacker Rasheem Biles when he leaped into Isaiah Sategna, who was trying to throw the second half of a double pass. The was woefully off-target and intercepted by Kade Phillips.
Later in the same drive, Phillips climbed Sategna’s back in the Texas end zone to break up a third-and-goal pass. The pass interference call moved the ball to the 2-yard line and gave Oklahoma a new set of downs. On the next play, Lloyd Avant scored.

Not so special
Oklahoma Sooners defensive lineman Danny Okoye (16) blocks a punt by Texas Longhorns punter Mac Chiumento during the first half of the Red River Rivalry on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Oklahoma recovered the blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown.
Shafkat Anowar/The Dallas Morning News
Is it fair to suggest Texas has a special teams issue? For the second straight game, the Longhorns allowed a punt attempt to turn into an opponent’s touchdown. Texas’ protection completely broke down on a second-quarter kick from its own end zone, allowing a swarm of Sooners to descend upon Mac Chiumento. Danny Okoye, coming straight up the middle, lunged to smother the kick and Dakoda Fields recovered it in the back of the end zone.
Two weeks ago, the problem was on a return. On another kick from deep in Texas territory, Tennessee’s Qua Moss broke to the right and went 57 yards untouched for a touchdown.
Texas also entered the day ranked 120th of 138 FBS schools in punt return defense, allowing an average of 14.8 yards per punt return.

It was the first blocked punt for a touchdown by the Sooners since 2019 against West Virginia.
Shaky starts
Let’s put it this way, if you got stuck in the insanely long Fletcher’s stands and were late to your seats, you didn’t miss much. The first quarter was not a classic. The kickoff was delayed due to missing pylons. Once they were found, the teams combined for one first down, a pair of timeouts and a pair of sacks. The first 15 minutes felt like they lasted two hours. There was zero flow to the game.
Oklahoma managed 15 yards on five possessions. Texas scored the quarter’s only points on a one-play, 41-yard strike from Arch Manning to Cam Coleman. Manning dropped back, then rolled to his left when the pocket started to collapse to find his receiver wide open.

The rest of the quarter: The teams netted a total of 37 yards.
