The Lone Star State was ranked among the very worst in the U.S. for safety, performing better only than Louisiana and Mississippi, according to WalletHub, a personal finance website that enlists experts to monitor safety and other finance-related issues in the United States.

“With every new headline about a mass shooting, terrorist attack, hate crime or natural disaster, many of us fear for our safety and that of our loved ones,” the report reads.

WalletHub analyzed 52 key safety indicators across all 50 states to rank the safest states in the country. Texas ranked No. 48. The study then calculated each state’s weighted average across all metrics to determine its overall score and used those scores to rank-order the states.

Those key indicators were grouped into five categories: personal and residential safety, financial security, road safety, workplace safety and emergency preparedness.
