District 3-6A ironing out

Every week, District 3-6A seemingly takes a different turn.

This past week, Aledo routed Arlington Bowie, the back-to-back district champion out of the Arlington-area, 45-7. Now Arlington Martin has the inside track at 3-0 but four teams are tied at 2-1 with Arlington Lamar on the outside looking in at 1-2, but key games coming up that could help get the team back into the playoff hunt.

Martin plays Bowie this Friday in a game that could get Bowie back on track to claim a third consecutive district title. But Aledo also takes on Arlington in a game between two of the top one-loss teams in the district. Lastly, Lamar faces Arlington Sam Houston in a game that, although on-paper leans Lamar’s way, Sam Houston is still a team that started 3-0 and is in search of getting things back on track.

But at the end of this week, we could have a wide-open district title race, another theoretically eliminated from the playoff hunt or, if Martin wins, the front-runner further establishing its first-place status.

Oak Cliff Super Bowl

With Kimball dropping down to Class 4A Division I during 2024’s UIL realignment cycle, the Oak Cliff Super Bowl against Carter has had district championship implications over the last two years and this year’s is no different.

Kimball is currently 5-2 and 4-0 in District 6-4A Division I and Carter is 4-2, and 4-0 in district. Wilmer-Hutchins is lurking in third place with one loss in district but that loss was to Kimball, meaning this Saturday’s game could really put the winner in a beautiful position to win the district.

Carter plays Wilmer-Hutchins next week but a win over rival Kimball could allow them to drop that game and still win a partial claim to the district crown come the end of the season, if they don’t drop another game.

Underrated area top offenses

Seeing teams like Allen, Argyle and Frisco Lone Star putting up huge numbers offensively this year isn’t a surprise. Those are names we’re used to seeing. But there are some other programs having standout offensive seasons that deserve showcasing at this time of year.

Both Terrell and McKinney North are top 10 offenses this year without even throwing for over 600 yards on the season. Terrell’s tandem of Antwian Thomas and Julian Ashley have combined for over 1,700 yards on the ground and 21 touchdowns while McKinney North has found success with a multi-faceted rushing attack led by senior John Richardson’s 913 yards. Kingston Norwood, Amari Young and Branden Walton have combined for over 900 yards as well.

Frisco Heritage is also putting up one of the top passing offenses in the area thanks to quarterback Chris Allen’s 1,402 yards passing and 13 touchdowns. Crandall, Thomas Jefferson and North Mesquite are also putting up big-time rushing numbers averaging over 260 yards on the ground per game.

Life Oak Cliff is also averaging nearly 500 yards of offense, even if you take away the team’s 105-14 win over Bonham, they’ll still rank as one of the area’s best.

Is this the year Keller beats Southlake?

Southlake Carroll’s beaten Keller 16 consecutive times since 1999.

In fact, Keller’s only wins over Southlake since the 1970s have been 1999, 1975 and 1970. Keller’s off to its best start to a season since 1967 now at 6-0 and Southlake has had its struggles earlier this season under first-year head coach Lee Munn.

But now Southlake has rattled off three consecutive wins and its young defense is starting to round into shape after tough games against North Crowley and Allen this year, which have both looked to be the top two teams in Class 6A this season.

Keller’s defense has had rough patches this year too, surrendering up 42, 53 and 46 points over the last three weeks. But both team’s offenses remain two of the best in Class 6A. Keller’s putting up nearly 500 yards of offense per game while averaging over 50 points per game while Southlake is averaging nearly 35 points per game and over 450 yards per game. It’s safe to presume that this one will be high-scoring but does Keller’s explosive offense, led by running back Blake Dyniewski, have enough to outscore Hudson Tomcheck and Southlake Carroll?

No rest in District 5-6A

After a massive blowout win over Denton Guyer, you’d think that unbeaten Lewisville was in for a lighter week, right? Wrong.

This week, Lewisville takes on Hebron who also moved to 3-0 in District 5-6A. Hebron started off 0-2 but have won three consecutive games since district started.

Denton Braswell, Flower Mound and Denton Guyer are all 4-2 or better this year meaning one team that could be playoff caliber is likely to get left out of the playoffs come season’s end. Little Elm is 0-3 but all three losses have come by one possession. They’ll be looking for an upset against Guyer, who’s also looking to get back on track following last week’s 42-7 loss.

Every week from here on out is worth paying attention to in this district because from the looks of it, almost every team still has something to play for.
