Approximately 11 million Gen Z adults moved to either another state or Washington, D.C. in 2024, according to new data released by Lending Tree on Monday, October 5. Using U.S. Census Bureau data, Lending Tree revealed nearly 24% of Gen Z adults relocated across state lines — but how many chose to call the Lone Star State home?
Everything’s bigger in Texas, including its Gen Z appeal. The Lone Star State ranked No. 7 on Lending Tree’s analysis of the most popular states for young adults to move to, with nearly 158,000 Gen Zers moving in compared to around 147,000 moving out, garnering a new gain of more than 10,700 new young adults.
Fellow Southern states joined Texas among the top ranks, with South Carolina cinching the No. 1 spot with more than 60,000 newcomers and just over 37,000 departures for a net gain of nearly 23,000. On the flip side, Texas’ West Coast rival, California, reported the highest net loss in the nation, with roughly 58,000 Gen Zers moving out of state in 2024.
When looking at move ins — and omitting move-out data — Texas did account for the largest volume of new residents, based on sheer figures. An estimated 157,869 new Gen Z residents called Texas home in 2024, besting California’s 128,718 newcomers during that same year.
